Preparing For Your First Laser Hair Removal Session

As your very first removal of hair by laser appointment looms there can be a large number of things to think about. Your clinic should provide you with detailed directions. Here is a handy list of things you might want to consider:

A month or more in advance

Discuss pain management with your laser clinic for hair removal and choose what to use.

There are topical anesthetics such as EMLA, which you apply to your skin. These products are excellent if you are worried about soreness during the treatment, however do be careful if you are spreading it on large areas of skin as the chemicals are absorbed into the bloodstream. Be sure to follow the directions closely.

Lose your tan! The lighter your skin is at the time you get your hair laser removal treatment, the more effective and permanent your results from hair laser removal are likely to be.

Stop tweezing, waxing, sugaring, using depilation creams and epilating at the very latest 2 weeks prior to treatment, and ideally a month or more prior. These methods of removal interfere with the follicle that the hair laser removal treatment aims to blast.

Think about whether you wish to take photographs of the body areas you are having treated to track how well the treatment works. The clinic might do this but even so you might want to keep your own record.

The week of your appointment

Consider the option of taking time off work if you are having facial hair removal by laser and feel you might be embarrassed about the red skin that you’ll probably have present straight after your laser hair removal treatment. For other body areas, you can usually go straight back to your usual day after your hair laser removal appointment.

During the last 24 hours prior to your appointment

The night before is a ideal time to shave the body areas you are going to have laser hair removal carried out on. If you shave within 24 hours of the procedure you will find the pain more tolerable and it can also be more effective because less of the laser energy is used on torching the hair above the skin, meaning a greater proportion of the laser energy is directed where it is needed, at the follicle, to kill it off.

The morning of your appointment

If you are having the hairs under your arms treated, skip the deodorant. Just wash your underarms with soap and rinse properly. If it’s summer and there’s a danger you might get too sweaty prior to your appointment, you could use unscented baby wipes to prevent any smells.

For any body areas, don’t put creams or lotions on before hair laser removal.

20 minutes prior to your appointment

Now’s a good time to take two Tylenol – there’s no need to feel more soreness than you have to when having laser hair removal.

Good luck with your laser treatment for hair removal!
